Lewis Hamilton took the win on the Nurburgring in what was a very tight battle. He finished in front of Mark Webber, Fernando Alonso, Sebastian Vettel and Felipe Massa
Mark Webber was first on the grid. The Aussie managed to score pole position yesterday. He was just in front of Lewis Hamilton, his teammate Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso. While the drivers moved their cars from the pits to the grid it started to drizzle slightly. That caused a lot of drivers to think about what tyres to take. In the end it wasn't enough to justify a change to intermediates. All drivers chose to start the race on the soft tyres.
After a short formation lap the lights turned red and when the they went out it was Lewis Hamilton who had the best start. After the short dash to first corner it was the Brit who came out first. He was followed by Webber, Alonso and Vettel. The championship leader battled with Alonso and managed to squeeze by after the Spaniard made a small mistake. In the midfield it was Nick Heidfeld and Paul di Resta who touched each other. Both were able to continue without serious damage but had to continue the race from the back of the field.
In the following laps Lewis Hamilton was able to create a short gap. Mark Webber was able to match his lap times though. Sebastian Vettel was under serious pressure by Fernando Alonso. In the 7th lap the Spaniard tried to pass him in turn 1 and succeeded. Not long after Vettel made a mistake and he spun in turn 10. It meant that the reigning world champion lost his connection to the leading drivers and was under attack by Nico Rosberg and Felipe Massa. At the same time it was Nick Heidfeld who became the first retirement. Heidfeld was pushed off the track by Buemi and his damaged Renault was stuck in the gravel.
Mark Webber was the first of the leaders to pit. He tried to gain an advantage by making a late call for new tyres. When he came in he was just behind Hamilton and just in front of Fernando Alonso. It worked as both Alonso and Hamilton came in two laps later. Webber was just in front of them but was stuck behind Felipe Massa who still had to come in for new tyres. After Massa pitted it was Webber leading Hamilton and Alonso. In the following laps the three drivers remained close.
Mark Webber was also the first to come in for his second stop. But this time it didn't work. A lap later Lewis Hamilton stopped and came out as first. Two laps after Webber's stop Alonso also came in. The Ferrari driver was first in the first corner but the warmer tyres of Hamilton enabled him to overtake Alonso on the outside of the second corner. Hamilton was able to push out fastest lap after fastest lap when his teammate Jenson Button had to retire from P6 with a hydraulics problem.
Two thirds of the race in it was Hamilton leading Alonso, Webber, Massa and Vettel. That would remain so till the leaders had to come in for their mandatory stop to fit the white medium compound tyres. Lewis Hamilton was the first to come in for the slower tyres in lap 50. He maintained the lead as Alonso came in two laps later. Webber decided to wait to fit his tyres but it didn't work out. In the end it was Hamilton who took the win. He was in front of Alonso, Webber, Vettel and Massa
