Fernando Alonso has won the British Grand Prix. The Spaniard won in front of Vettel, Webber, Hamilton and Massa.
After the mixed conditions in yesterday's qualifying it was Mark Webber who was allowed to start from pole position. He was in front of his teammate Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso. Button was fifth and Lewis Hamilton had to start from tenth. The adjusted blown diffuser rules seemed to hurt the McLarens a lot.
Before the start of the race the track was partly dry and partly really wet. The conditions made the tyre choice really difficult. Everybody went for intermediates despite the start finish straight being completely dry. When the lights went out it was Sebastian Vettel who had the best start. The German overtook his teammate within the first metres and didn't look back. He was leading Webber, Alonso and Massa. Lewis Hamilton, he was able to work himself up to P5 within a few laps.
After 3 laps the first car retired. Heikki Kovalainen had a gearbox failure which meant the end of his race. The first to come in for a pit stop was Michael Schumacher. The German got a new nose after damaging it and a new set of soft dry tyres. Everybody followed in the following laps as Michael Schumacher set purple fastest sector times. After the pit stops it was Vettel leading Webber, Alonso, Hamilton, Massa and Button. Both McLaren drivers were pushing the Ferrari's hard on their soft tyres and were able to pass their Ferrari counterparts. The front runners were closing in on each other as Hamilton and Alonso set fastest lap after fastest lap. Fernando Alonso was a bit faster than Hamilton and took back his third place.
Lewis Hamilton immediately opted to pit for new tyres. He was slightly faster on his tyres than the other front runners but they waited three laps to come in. Those three laps were enough for Hamilton to overtake Webber. When Vettel and Alonso came in for their stops it went wrong for the German. His left rear wheel didn't lock and his stop took too much time. Alonso immediately overtook him in the pits while Lewis Hamilton did the same on the track. After the stop it was Alonso leading Hamilton, Vettel, Webber and Button.
In the following laps it became clear that Vettel was stuck behind Hamilton and he opted to undercut the Britain by pitting early. It worked as a lap later Hamilton came in. When Button came in his front right wasn't fitted properly when the lollipopman released him. Button immediately knew what had happened and stopped his car just outside the pits. His race was over. After the third stop it was Alonso in front of Vettel, Hamilton, Webber and Massa.
In the last laps of the race it was Alonso who cruised to the win. Lewis Hamilton who was driving in third was having fuel issues and had to slow down a bit. Webber overtook the Britain and managed to get a place on the podium. Webber was able to challenge Vettel but was told to back off in the last lap. Massa and Hamilton also got into a fight in the last corner as Massa tried to overtake Hamilton. In the end it was Alonso finishing in front of Vettel, Webber, Hamilton and Massa.
