Sebastian Vettel has won the European Grand Prix in Valencia. He led Alonso, Webber, Hamilton and Massa.
The race started with Sebastian Vettel on pole position. The German was fastest in yesterday's qualifying and was looking to continue his great form. Behind him on the grid were his teammate Mark Webber, Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa.
When the red lights dimmed it was Vettel who could hold onto his pole position. He was the first to go through the first corner. Lewis Hamilton didn't have a good start and lost positions to Alonso and Massa. All cars made it through the first laps without incidents. After ten laps the top 5 was within 7 seconds. All did similar lap times.
The first to come in for new tyres were Heidfeld, Barrichello and Kobayashi. All three were fighting for P11. The first of the top driver to come in for new tyres was Lewis Hamilton. The Brit went for new tyres. A lap later he was followed by Mark Webber who was second. Because of his early pit stop Hamilton was able to overtake Massa when he went for his pit stop. After everybody pitted it was Vettel leading Webber, Alonso, Hamilton and Massa.
Fernando Alonso was flying on his new tyres. He was just behind Mark Webber and was able to get within the 1 second DRS margin. After a few laps the Spaniard made a move and passed Webber for second place. Hamilton struggled with his tyres and burned through them quite fast. He was the first to come in for his second stop in lap 24. After his stop Hamilton set fastest lap after fastest lap but he was almost 35 seconds behind. Five laps later the rest came in for their second stop. Webber got his P2 back from Alonso during the pit stops. The Aussie came in a lap earlier and was able to set a faster outlap than Alonso's inlap.
In lap 43 the first car in front fitted the Medium tyes. Webber and Hamilton were the first to change their tyres. Their pace was a little slower but their times started to drop. When Vettel and Alonso came in for their tyres Alonso regained the second place. Vettel was comfortably leading the race. The German created a small gap to Alonso and wasn't under pressure any more. He coasted to his 6th win of the season.
