Sebastian Vettel has won the Monaco Grand Prix. The German finished in front of Alonso, Button, Webber and Kobayashi.
Sebastian Vettel started from pole position followed by Jenson Button and Mark Webber. Because of his troublesome qualifying Lewis Hamilton started from P9. He was however free to change his tyres and chose to start on the prime tyre. After a problem free formation lap the race started. It was Vettel who got to the first corner as leader followed by Button and Alonso. Webber was fourth and Rosberg fifth. In the next laps it became clear that Hamilton was stuck behind Michael Schumacher in tenth. Hamilton was over 25 seconds behind the leader after just 9 laps. The Brit was able to make a move stick at the end of the start finish straight and overtook Schumacher. He was immediately a second faster.
Michael Schumacher was the first to stop in lap 12 after also losing a position to Rubens Barrichello. The first of the leaders to stop was Jenson Button. In lap 15 he came in for new supersoft tyres. A lap later the leader, Sebastian Vettel, came in. It wasn't a perfect stop for the German as there seemed some confusion about what tyres should be fitted. This cost Vettel the lead as Button was able to get the most of his tyres. Vettel fitted normal soft tyres and started losing time. Jenson Button chose to do his second stop after building up a small lead. He got another set of supersoft tyres. Button came out behind Vettel and lost the lead.
After being stuck in traffic Lewis Hamilton chose to pit early. He changed his tyres to the supersoft tyres. It didn't really help Hamilton as he came back behind Felipe Massa. It took a couple of laps before Hamilton tried to overtake the Brazilian in the hairpin. There wasn't enough room to complete the move and they touched lightly. In the tunnel Hamilton got a lot better drive and overtook Massa who came onto the marbles. He crashed into the tunnel wall and the safety car was deployed.
After the safety car came back in it was Vettel leading Button, Alonso, Sutil and Kobayashi. Hamilton got a drive through penalty for hitting Massa in the hairpin. Button on relatively new red tyres acknowledged that he couldn't pass Vettel. He opted for the clear air and fresh soft tyres which he didn't use yet. Button was flying on his new harder tyres. He closed the gap to Vettel with 2 seconds per lap. In just a few laps the gap was less than 10 seconds. Not much later Button was just a second behind Vettel and Alonso. Vettel and Alonso looked like they weren't going to stop anymore.
Vettel was leading the race followed by Alonso and Button. They were closing in on a lot of drivers who were going to be lapped. A huge pile up between those driver caused another safety car to deploy. The race was red flagged not much later because of the damaged car of Petrov. Petrov wasn't able to come out of his car immediately despite the crash not looking very hard. The FIA made clear that the objective was to get out on track again when possible. Most driver used the red flag to change their tyres to the option tyres for the last 6 laps.
After the restart the order in front remained the same: Vettel in front of Alonso and Button. Hamilton tried to overtake Maldonado which forced Maldonado in the tyres. The Venezuelan retired.
